As a resource for California class action defense attorneys, we provide weekly, unofficial summaries of the legal categories for new class action lawsuits filed in California state and federal courts in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, San Diego, San Mateo, Oakland/Alameda and Orange County areas. We include only those categories that include 10% or more of the class action filings during the relevant time frame. This report covers the time period from April 1 – 7, 2011, during which time 65 new class actions were filed in these courts. In past years, class actions involvement employment-related claims often accounted for more than half of the total number of new class actions filed in California state and federal courts each week, but this level has not yet been realized this year. However, the numbers are getting closer. During this reporting period, 32 new labor law class actions filed, representing 49% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other category to break the 10% threshold involved class actions alleging violations of federal securities laws with 9 new filings (14% of the total number of new class actions filed).

As a resource to California class action defense attorneys, we provide weekly, unofficial summaries of the legal categories for new class action lawsuits filed in California state and federal courts in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, San Diego, San Mateo, Oakland/Alameda and Orange County areas. We include only those categories that include 10% or more of the class action filings during the relevant timeframe. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, this report covers the time period from November 19 – December 2, 2010, during which time 77 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. Labor law class actions generally account for more than half of all new class actions filed in these California courts, but for a second straight week this proved not to be true. There were only 32 new class actions alleging employment-related claims, representing a relatively low 42% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other categories to break the 10% threshold involved class actions alleging violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 16 new filings, representing 21% of the total number of new class actions filed, and class actions alleging violations of federal securities laws with 11 new filings, representing 14% of the total number of new class actions filed.

To assist class action defense attorneys anticipate the types of cases against which they will have to defend in California, we provide weekly, unofficial summaries of the legal categories for new class action lawsuits filed in California state and federal courts in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, San Diego, San Mateo, Oakland/Alameda and Orange County areas. We include only those categories that include 10% or more of the class action filings during the relevant timeframe. This report covers the time period from November 12 – 18, 2010, during which time 59 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. While labor law class actions often account for more than half of all new class actions filed in these California courts, this was not true during this reporting period. There were only 26 new class actions alleging employment-related claims, representing 44% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other category to break the 10% threshold involved class actions alleging violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 9 new filings, representing 15% of the total number of new class actions filed.

This report covers the time period from November 5 – 11, 2010, during which time only 39 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. Labor law class actions often account for more than half of all new class actions filed in these California courts, as was the case during this reporting period. There were 20 new labor law class actions, representing 51% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other categories to break the 10% threshold involved class actions alleging violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 7 new filings, representing 18% of the total number of new class actions filed, and class actions against financial institutions challenging foreclosure proceedings, with 4 new filings, representing 10% of the total number of new class actions filed.

This report covers the time period from October 29 – November 4, 2010, during which time 49 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. As a general rule, labor law class actions top the list of new class action filings, frequently accounting for more than half of all new class actions filed in these California courts. But during this reporting period, the number of new labor law class actions dropped dramatically, with only 13 new cases filed, representing a paltry 27% of the total number of new class actions filed. The top spot this reporting period went to class actions that alleged violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 17 new filings, representing 35% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other category to break the 10% threshold involved class actions alleging violations of federal securities laws, with 8 new filings, representing 16% of the total number of new class actions filed.

During this reporting period, 30 new labor law class actions were filed, representing 55% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other category to break the 10% threshold involved claims under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 8 new filings, representing 15% of the total number of new class actions filed.

We include only those categories that include 10% or more of the class action filings during the relevant timeframe. This report covers the time period from October 15 – 21, 2010, during which time 52 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. For this reporting period, only 24 new labor law class actions were filed, representing only 46% of the total number of new class actions filed — well below the percentage frequently filed. And just like last week, the only other categories to break the 10% threshold involved claims under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 10 new filings (representing 19% of the total number of new class actions filed), and class action alleging violations of federal securities laws,with 6 new class actions (representing 12% of the total number of new class actions filed).

The percentage of new labor law class actions has been down recently, and during this reporting period that percentage again came in well below 50% of the total number of new class actions filed in these courts. For this reporting period, only 14 new labor law class actions were filed, representing a mere 38% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other categories to break the 10% threshold involved claims under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 7 new filings (representing 19% of the total number of new class actions filed), and class action alleging violations of federal securities laws,with 5 new class actions (representing 14% of the total number of new class actions filed).

To assist class action defense attorneys anticipate the types of claims against which they will have to defend in California courts, we provide weekly, unofficial summaries of the legal categories for new class action lawsuits filed in California state and federal courts in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, San Diego, San Mateo, Oakland/Alameda and Orange County areas. We include only those categories that include 10% or more of the class action filings during the relevant timeframe. This report covers the time period from October 1 – 7, 2010, during which time 60 new class actions were filed in these California state and federal courts. While the percentage of new labor law class actions has been down recently, during this reporting period that percentage again rose above 50% of all new class actions filed in these courts. For this reporting period, 33 new labor law class actions were filed, representing 55% of the total number of new class actions filed. The only other category to break the 10% threshold involved claims under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), which includes false advertising claims, with 13 new filings (representing 22% of the total number of new class actions filed).
